How they got out in 2008 ...
End of Season Player Ratings brought to you by the Roving Reporter...
Well with the season now over and with time running out before the Roving Reporter jets off to a well earned rest in the warmth of Australia he has been penning his thoughts on how well or not the Old Doms players performed in the 2008 season. He has decided on a "Thumbs up Rating" which is described below:~
The player listing is in alphabetical order. The Old Doms accept no responsibility for the RR comments as these are given in good faith in the hope that some of the players will pull their fingers out for next season. So here we go...
Kath Adie CCC Kath's first season for the Doms following a free transfer organised by Mark Hunt. Kath had a good start to her time with the Doms. Played only 13 games but showed that she knows her way around the game of cricket. A good change bowler taking 13 wickets. Her batting was less impressive. Looked the part and played straight but was to often out playing a poor shot when she was in. A class act in the field and caught some very good catches. Really showed up the boys in the field. Will do better next season.
Justin Anstey CC A poor season - only managed 4 matches and took three innings to muster a paltry 15 runs. Thank heavens he didn't bowl. Although his fielding was energetic his safe hands were left at home - dropped a dolly. Needs to get to the nets!
John Anstey CC Another injury prone season! Only tempted to play 10 games this term. Given six batting opportunities to reach his 1,000 Doms run but failed - miserably. Less than 10 needed for the mile stone but still pulled up short. If John were a race horse one would have suspected a Triad doping scandal ! His bowling faired a bit better taking 7 wickets with a best of 3-12. Fielding, well if you cant shine fielding in the slips...
Steve Beeston CCC Turned up for our last game. Looked a very energetic lad in the outfield. Bowling is a bit suspect. Didn't see him bat because those up the order hogged all the bowling.
Alan Blount CC Where the hell did he get to all season? Played a few useful knocks but some very scary running between the wickets - even made Phil Walshe look good at calling! Was he injured?
James Hickin CCCC Failed to get five thumbs due to his somewhat psychosomatic injuries caused by being a bit porky and a spat with the Skipper. Batted really well after being convinced he is not an opener - shame he just failed to get 500 runs but a good effort. His keeping has improved again this season but needs to be more sprightly behind the sticks. Still the best scoffer by far for the Doms.
Tom Hickin CCCC What a cracking season for the lad. In his first real season for the Doms he turned out 17 times. Scored some very good runs and made a cracking 53 not out which won us a game. His bowling is improving and if he nets more his good ball consistency will improve. Much faster bowler that tortoise Hunt. As with all youthful boys ran around the outfield like a whippet. Oh how I wish I was his age again...
John Hodgson CCCC First time out with the Doms this year - had a cracking season with bat and ball - not given a "five" because of so few matches played. Played 8 and scored at 31 per innings and took a sack full of wickets - 19 (although one haul was 6 of wickets against some team of lemmings). Can he perform this well over 25 or so matches against some of the better sides? Time will tell.
Colin Hunt CC With only 7 appearances - we all wonder why, injuries we were told! Colin had little or no time to make any impact. He did manage to get 8 wickets form his 33 skiddy overs and as usual was energetic in the field. Needs to play more matches to get a better estimate of his form.
Mark Hunt CCC Not Marks best season. Proved he can consistently take wickets and most would be overjoyed with 33 but he has not progressed - is this Marks plateau in terms of bowling? He needs to re look at his bowling to see where he can offer more variety. We don't want to see that Oley'esk "spin bowling" effort again. His batting is a let down - given 17 opportunities to score some runs and failed - miserably. His fielding was again good but to many "Morris" nut megs creeping into his game.
Karim Ladha CC Only one element of his game has improved this season - fielding, once his weaker element now his strongest so what gone wrong with the batting and bowling? Batting, 14 attempts to score runs and only once did he look like scoring - 18 not out with some flashing shots but that all disappeared. He seems to be trying not to get out rather than trying to score runs - more nets prescribed. Looks like the various skippers this season have opted not to give Karim a bowl, maybe the Doms have a depth of more useful bowlers to call on? try more nets.
Alan Last CCC Time moves on but the old body still keeps resisting any attempt to call it a day. Next year will see his 50th year of playing cricket - a golden season ahead? Eye surgery followed by family commitments reduced the number of matches played but still managed 20. Bowling still remains steady and consistent, 25 wickets is about right. For some reason only considered good enough to bat higher than 8 on two occasions hence needing to "entertain" when he gets the opportunity to bat. Strangely fine leg seems to be his regular fielding position. When surveying the other 10 fielders one wonders how the hell some of them are not fielding down his way for the amount of effort they put in...
Dave Moore CC A fine body of a player - a throw back from yesteryear when all players seem to have a wider girth than Gerty the girl with the big girth!! Played 9 matches and finally got off the mark with the bat, a scorching thick edged four I think. Steady in the field, rock steady...
Sam Moore CCC Green hair let his season down. Had little opportunity to play but squeezed a few games in. Had a good tour and scored a good 50. Showed signs of being a useful bowler. Young and energetic in the field as a 17 year old should be.
Steve Morris CCC Some awful batting let him down towards the end of the season as he entered uncharted territory - the nervous nine hundreds.. Ended up 17 short - all those turned down easy runs came back to haunt him. His bowling, 49 overs or so of mediocrity was endured by the team - he did get 10 wickets though which I suppose cant be too bad. His fielding, well I have never seen so many nutmegs since he the last reunion of the Nutmeg Association was held in the NEC. It was sometimes so predicable.
Tony Peck CC Couldn't bat and couldn't bowl this season. Although our Tony has been out of sorts for most of the year things have finally caught up with him this will not stop the RR crucifying his batting, just a long list of poor shot selection and even poorer shot execution. Those heady years of batting a distant memory. He did take four or so wickets but struggle to find any form this year.
Peddu C Who? yes that's right who? - Where was he all season. Played only two games (for the Doms), two innings scoring 22 and a couple of wickets. A mystery season.
Tom Perry CCCC Mr Consistent with all three disciplines. Batted well but did not push on when looking set - concentration maybe? Can do better. Really good 85 not out was the highlight. 22 wickets was a good haul for the Doms regular first change bowler, perhaps more wickets should be his goal next season. Fielding energetic and confident, no nutmegs in his direction. Very vocal on the pitch in geeing up a flagging team.
Dean Porter CCC Only six games played but still managed 132 runs, perhaps not against the most testing teams we play. Picked up four wickets and generally fielded well. Would need to see him play more often to see if he can do that through the grind of a full season.
Alex Rich CC Only two outings for the Doms and showed that he has learnt from his time with Earlswood, perhaps he needs to step up a level and play for the Old Doms more regularly.
Rob Rolls CCC Another player who came into the team part way through the season. Looked useful with the bat and showed that he can bowl a bit as well, getting 9 wickets at 11 runs a piece. He sometimes looks off with the fairies whilst fielding. Time keeping suspect as is his direction of travel. Would be good to see him play more next year.
Alan Rowan CCC You may think three thumbs is generous, but given his age three appearances for him was like a full season for the rest of us. Made a solid 13 in his best innings and looked so good until he got dragged into the Walshe malaise and got himself out. No magical hands this season.
Nick Rowan CCC Cruised through 2 matches - not a nutmeg in sight.
Manjo Sukumaran CCC An ok season, took him until the last game to show the world that he can bat - I think he need to see a shrink to get him into the right mind set for batting. We were grateful he only bowled 8 overs all season. he looked to have improved in fielding, maybe because he stopped having fielding coaching from Steve Morris...
S Thomas C Who the hell is S Thomas?
Phil Walshe CCCC Players Player so he must score highly on the rating. Not to be seen last season - some sort of mystery injury was the story.. Well after a season off he has come back with a rattling good all round (excluding any physical movement in the field) season. With the bat scored highly with nearly 400 runs to his name. I bet he rues all those aimless dot balls we had to endure watching. He made a useful contribution to the wicket haul this season bagging 14. 17 catches all without moving an inch, a feat never to be repeated some say.
Dave Wright CCC Good contributions with both bat and and to a lesser degree the ball. Looked confident batting and scored a memorable 106 and marred the moment by not raising his bat towards the pavilion. 5 wickets, a good return for the tripe he bowled. His energy in the field was sometimes lacking in timing but amusing. His out to "obstruction" was a classic worth a point in anyone's book.
Scorer (Jemma) CCCC Did a sterling job all season with little criticism from Stato - a top mark was missed only when at the last game of the season failed to complete the book though her own excesses. A poor end to the season for Jemma.
Tea Ladies CCCCC Played a blinder all season, tea was a treat and not to need to think about clearing up was a bigger treat for the players. So a big cheer for the girls. Hip hip..
Supporters CCCC Generally a great boost to the Doms team seeing loads of supporters milling around waiting for something funny to happen ! Lost the final mark through leaving the toilet seat down. We can only hope that they have learnt a lesson not to do that ever again.
